Who is a candidate: Abdominoplasty is done to firm and smooth loose sagging skin of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Also, tightening of the muscles of the abdominal wall may be performed. This results in a flatter, tighter abdomen..
Procedure: A horizontal incision is placed just within or above the pubic area and around the navel. The skin is separated from the abdominal wall. Loose underlying tissue and muscle is brought together with sutures. Excess abdominal skin is removed. A small opening is made for your naval so that its position remains unchanged. After surgery, you will have a flatter, firmer abdomen. The abdominal scar is permanent but will fade somewhat over time.
Healing: Small drainage tubes are placed beneath the skin to help prevent fluids from accumulating. Dressings may be applied to your abdomen. You may not be able to stand perfectly straight at first but will be encouraged to get out of bed and walk soon after surgery. Typically, you can return to non-strenuous work within the first three weeks after your procedure.
